Walter Elbertson (Timothy Bottoms) is young, asthmatic and shy, lost within his family of overachievers. Englishwoman Lila Fisher (Maggie Smith) is awkward and emotionally repressed. The two of them meet on their respective holidays in Spain, and proximity gradually, nervously turns into a tremulous romantic attachment.
