The prospect of a whole season among country folk yawning ahead of him, he returns to his favourite hobby: matchmaking. Roland throws himself into the Game of Hearts, interfering in the lives of the people of the village and trying to distract himself from his business partner and landlord, the beautiful if awkward Basil Hode. But he and Basil are forced to venture into Faerie together, to rescue their friend Edith Rookwood from her enemies.
