James B. Rowell's life spanned some pivotal years in the history of the Christian church. Theological liberalism was on the rise and there was acceptance of Anglo-Catholicism within the Established Church.After his conversion, Rowell studied at Kensit Memorial College and began ministering as a Wickliffe Preacher throughout England. He came to Canada in 1912 to further his studies at Brandon College. With the outbreak of the First World War, Rowell served on a field ambulance unit until he was deemed too unwell to continue serving in 1918. He married Lucy Kelk and returned to Canada to pastor Baptist churches in Kamloops and Victoria, British Columbia. Rowell was involved in the fundamentalist controversy that brought about the formation of the Convention of Regular Baptists of British Columbia. His leadership at Central Baptist Church in Victoria, and in the new denomination more broadly, alongside his apologetic work for British Protestantism, his worldwide evangelistic tract ministry, polemical writings against Roman Catholicism and expansive evangelistic efforts made him one of the more influential Canadian Baptists in the mid-twentieth century.James Rowell was a vigorous defender of the Reformed faith, a church planter, a visionary and motivator, a prolific writer, an educator and an effective evangelist-a lover of truth and a lover of souls.
