MANAGEMENT OF MAXILLARY IMPACTED CANINE

Maxillary impacted canines are a common clinical problem in orthodontics, second only to third molars in frequency. Their management requires early diagnosis, accurate localization, and a multidisciplinary approach involving orthodontic and surgical procedures.Early detection through clinical examination and radiographic evaluation helps prevent complications such as root resorption of adjacent teeth, cyst formation, and loss of arch space. Interceptive treatment, including extraction of the deciduous canine, may facilitate spontaneous eruption in selected cases.When spontaneous eruption does not occur, surgical exposure combined with orthodontic traction is the preferred treatment. Surgical techniques include open eruption and closed eruption methods, chosen based on the position of the impacted tooth. Orthodontic mechanics are then applied to guide the canine into proper alignment within the dental arch while maintaining periodontal health.Successful management depends on proper diagnosis, careful treatment planning, and controlled biomechanics to achieve functional occlusion and aesthetic outcomes.
