Maybe -- I'll be .

Maybe I'll be a rancher, and raise wild horses. Maybe a doctor, and mend the horses and the ranchers. Maybe a pilot, and fly the doctor to the sick. In this warm picture book, a child counts up twelve things to be when grown -- and finds that each one leans on the last. The rancher needs the doctor. The doctor needs the pilot. The carpenter built the school where the teacher taught the scientist. Every job in the world is holding hands with every other one. Then, at the end of the counting, comes the answer the child already knew: whichever one to choose, there is one thing that never changes. The final page is left waiting -- for a photograph of your own child, so the book ends on the face it was always about. Illustrated throughout in soft vintage watercolor. Available in a Boy's Edition and a Girl's Edition, so the child turning the pages sees someone who looks like them. Written by a grandfather for his five grandchildren.
