Modern Biotechnology and Human Rights: GMOs the Challenge of Food Security: Controversies Dilemmas

Despite the progress made in curbing the global food crisis, the situation remains alarming, as approximately 800 million people still suffer from chronic hunger. To feed the world today and tomorrow, it is believed, we must necessarily increase food supplies, which requires a significant improvement in production and productivity. For some, only a technological revolution can relieve the world of the heavy burden of hunger. From this perspective, GMOs are seen as an indispensable solution for achieving food security. Yet the relationship between GMOs and food security-and more broadly, the right to food-is by no means easy to define. In fact, this technology lies at the heart of a fierce controversy that extends beyond the confines of laboratories into the public social arena. A true social phenomenon, GMOs continue to stir up passions and crystallize tensions, polarizing positions from one extreme to the other along the dividing line, as the stakes are colossal.
