Bol Haruki Murakami is one of the world’s best-known living authors, whose complex yet accessible novels have been translated into dozens of languages. His idiosyncratic and densely symbolic prose, often considered a form of magical realism, resonates with readers around the world. This book will argue that his signature style was formulated in order to explore the posttraumatic mind, often mimicking dissociation. Having initially begun writing in order to heal himself of various psychological wounds, Murakami has to date written fourteen novels that each depict profoundly damaged individuals, examining how people become traumatised, conveying these sensations, and offering a path to recovery. This has been achieved through a unique combination of literary devices that many have compared to the magical realism more commonly associated with South American postcolonialist literature. In this book, his style will be termed “Murakamian Magical Realism” due to its similarity to, but distinction from, the wider genre.
