Artistic standards, entertainment, political or charitable ambitions, careerism or commercialism - what has changed over the past few decades? This study examines the impact of socio-economic changes on major popular music festivals from the late 1960s to the present day. It examines the impact of these changes - in particular the increasing commercialisation and the quantitative growth in the number of events - on artistic standards and non-commercial, i.e. social or political, engagement, whilst also considering the often-encountered romanticised idealisation of the past.
