The Sh¿wa period was the longest reign of all the previous Japanese emperors. During the pre-1945 period, Japan descended into political totalitarianism, ultranationalism and fascism culminating in Japan's invasion of China in 1937. This was part of an overall global period of social upheavals and conflicts such as the Great Depression and the Second World War. Japan's entrance into the worldwide conflict in 1941 was the beginning of the end of the Empire of Japan. Defeat in the Second World War brought about radical change to Japan. For the first and only time in its history, Japan was occupied by foreign powers; an occupation that lasted seven years.
