In addition to examining the origins of neglect and sexual abuse within the family, this book addresses the question of how such traumas can affect children's psychosocial and health development. This work adopts a social work perspective, meaning that the proposed solutions are informed by both social science and theoretical approaches from the health sciences. Resource-oriented social work with children affected by neglect and sexual abuse thus deliberately shifts the focus away from a deficit-oriented approach towards coping strategies and resources that are inherent in every child and which can be unlocked and strengthened through appropriate professional practice and an appropriate professional attitude.
