NEW URBANISM:: THE PATHWAY TO GOOD URBAN GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE

Urbanism emerged as a response to contemporary circumstances of urban development and this evolvement was characterised by deteriorating environmental quality, declining public realm, and the rise of non-place edge-city phenomena collectively seen as sprawl. New urbanism as a concept, seeks to provide solutions to the myriads of problems in the modern designs and thus protect the physical pattern of our cities as well as the arrangement of the salient features of the core areas in the urban settings, taking into consideration the vulnerable groups. New urbanism is built on the principles of ideal neighborhood capable of self-existing and self-surviving with the purpose of balancing the housing units, shops, offices with the automobiles to guide against transport problems. Hence, this book provides explanations on the historical background of the concept and the description of the concept. It further examines the principles, characteristics and model of the new urbanism, stating explicitly the critics of the New urbanism and some of the benefits of the new urbanism.
