No Villains Required: How Good People Build Bad Churches

Most books about toxic churches tell you to find the villain. This one tells you that most of the time, there isn't one.No Villains Required is a diagnostic book for ordinary church members - the people sitting in pews, not the people standing behind pulpits. It takes the lens of organizational culture and points it at the local church, asking a question that rarely gets asked plainly: how do good people, making locally reasonable decisions, build something nobody intended and nobody would defend?Drawing on decades of pastoral ministry, Army chaplaincy, seminary training, and hundreds of conversations with people who have been hurt by the churches they loved, Dr. Joseph Martin offers a framework for seeing what is actually operating beneath a church's stated values - and for making informed, faithful decisions about what to do when what you see doesn't match what you were told. This book will help you: - Identify the cultural patterns that produce unhealthy churches without requiring a single bad actor- Recognize the difference between a local congregation problem and a movement-level problem- Understand why good people stay in unhealthy systems long past the point of obvious evidence- Evaluate any church - including the one you currently attend - against concrete, biblically grounded criteria- Make a wise, deliberate decision about whether to stay and engage, or leave toward something betterThe poison is the same. The dosage is different. Whether you are in a church with a controlling pastor or a congregation that has quietly drifted from its first love, the mechanisms at work are the same ones this book diagnoses from its first pages.Prophetic enough to name the problem. Pastoral enough to point the way back to Christ and His Word.
