North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO): A Transatlantic Defense Agreement

NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is essentially the world's largest military alliance. It was created in 1949, after World War II, with the initial objective of curbing the expansion of the USSR. In short, it is a political and military alliance currently made up of 32 countries in Europe and North America. Its headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium. It is based on the Washington Treaty, a brief but powerful document that states that member countries share common values such as democracy, individual freedoms and the rule of law. Its key functions are: "One for all and all for one". The heart of NATO is Article 5, which establishes the principle of collective defense, which implies that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all, a principle that has only been activated once in history, following the September 11, 2001 attacks in the USA.
