NORTHWOODS

History is often changed by people who do not turn away.Tuscany, 1962. As the Cold War pushes the world toward the brink of nuclear confrontation, Elena Bucci arrives in the medieval hill town of Massa Marittima, unaware that events far beyond its ancient walls are about to change the course of her journey. An unexpected encounter draws her into a dangerous international pursuit and into the life of Gigi Mariotti, a local guide whose knowledge of Tuscany proves invaluable as the two find themselves caught between secrecy, conflicting loyalties, and forces neither fully understands.Yet the danger surrounding them is only part of their journey. As Gigi introduces Elena to the architecture, history, and traditions of Tuscany, their encounters lead to conversations about destiny and chance, the mysteries of human existence, and the choices that give meaning to our lives. Against a landscape shaped by centuries of conflict, beauty, and memory, their journey gradually becomes something more personal: a discovery of each other and of the beliefs by which they choose to live.Inspired by extraordinary historical events and grounded in meticulous research, NORTHWOODS blends espionage and romance with history, ideas, and a cast of colorful, sometimes larger-than-life characters whose humor and eccentricities offer a glimpse into the complex theater of life.Against the beauty of Tuscany and the shadow of nuclear confrontation, Elena and Gigi discover that history is not shaped only in government chambers or intelligence headquarters. Sometimes it turns on the decision of an ordinary person not to look away.
