It is responsible for implementing and overall coordination of Australian Government policy and programs for Indigenous Australians. The responsibilities of the now disbanded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services were transferred to a number of other government departments. It was previously part of the then Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA), the Minister was Amanda Vanstone.
