For three years, from 1942 to 1944, Josef Schwind served as major in the air force of the German occupation forces in Greece. The passionate Bavarian photographer and philhellene from Regensburg, Germany, used his military stationing as an opportunity to photograph and document the countryside, people, cities, children, and scenes of nature of the Greek mainland and islands. These historically valuable and aesthetically pleasing photographs document the daily life, both the familiar and the idyllic, of sunken Greece during the years of occupation. 156 black and white photos are complemented by an essay from Heinz A. Richter providing a historical background of Greece during WWII, while Reinhard Stupperich provides commentary on the cities captured by Schwind. German text.
