Olympic In Historical Photographs

Olympic in Historical Photographs presents a curated visual history of the Olympic Peninsula and the landscapes that today form Olympic National Park, a protected area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.Drawing on archival photographs from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the volume documents the Olympic region as a historical landscape shaped by both nature and human presence. The images trace early exploration, Indigenous life, settlement patterns, transportation routes, logging activities, and coastal communities that existed long before the formal establishment of the national park. The book offers a comprehensive view of the region's exceptional natural diversity, including temperate rainforests, alpine environments, inland lakes, and the rugged Pacific coastline. These landscapes are shown not only as natural environments, but as places where people lived, worked, and moved through the land during a formative period of Washington State history.Olympic in Historical Photographs is intended for readers interested in historical photography, regional history, national parks, and the visual history of the American landscape.
