Carl Malmsten's aesthetic of the home, set out in *Skönhet och trevnad i hemmet* (1925), emerged at a time when new ways of thinking and technologies were emerging. These permeated people's everyday lives and fundamentally transformed their thinking and behaviour. Using the examples of the Svenska Slödföreningen, functionalism and Ellen Key's essay *Skönhet för alla*, this paper examines how the social and philosophical developments of the early 20th century are reflected in Malmsten's writings on domestic beauty and the aesthetics of furniture. This analysis serves to illustrate the transformative impact of aesthetics, design and new schools of thought on Swedish society.
