En la antigua Grecia existían numerosos métodos adivinatorios: la observación de los astros, el estudio de las vísceras de los animales, el análisis de los sueños... También contaban con santuarios oraculares, donde se realizaban rituales y sacrificios para interpretar la voluntad de los dioses. Entre todos estos templos, el más importante era el Oráculo de Delfos, consagrado al dios Apolo. La Pitia era la sacerdotisa de este santuario, al que los consultantes acudían en busca de consejos y predicciones. Sentada sobre un trípode de bronce, ella entraba en trance y canalizaba al dios, ofreciendo sus respuestas que serían interpretadas por los sacerdotes del templo.
