Other Lives, Places - Part 1: A Bronx Childhood

Migraine, the first volume of Life on Other Planets, explores Freddy's Bronx childhood in the 1950s, his romantic ambitions cut short by a disabling condition that alienates him from the brash vitality of his peers, forcing him to create a compensatory inner world that makes him both fragile and "special". It describes his adolescent struggles to fit in, his first erotic experiences, and an intellectual formation that leads him to resist the pervasive conformism of that first full post-war period. At the same time, it breathes nostalgia for that era of healthy neighborhood life and for the mythical sway of one's origins, which he likens to a lesser Genesis - one we would love to revisit as Scrooge does, on the coattails of the Spirit of Christmas Past.
