Have you ever wondered why some teachings of Jesus were passed down through word of mouth before they were ever written down, or what the earliest Christians learned directly from the surviving apostles? The Expositions of the Sayings of the Lord provides a compelling modern translation of the surviving fragments of one of the most important lost texts in early Christian history. Written in the early second century by Papias, the Bishop of Hierapolis, this monumental five-volume work originally served as a collection of oral traditions, parables, and sayings of Jesus gathered directly from the "elders"-those who had personally known the original apostles.Though the complete manuscripts were lost to the sands of time, the surviving fragments preserved by later historians offer an unprecedented window into the living memory of the early church. Far more than a simple historical chronicle, Papias's work delves into profound themes of millenarianism, the origins of the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, and the vibrant, often strange oral traditions that circulated among the very first communities of believers. What You Will Discover in This Modern Translation:The Origins of the Gospels Explore Papias's fascinating historical accounts of how Mark recorded the teachings of Peter, and how Matthew compiled the sayings of Christ in the Hebrew dialect.Lost Parables and Prophecies Uncover the extraordinary oral traditions, including vivid descriptions of the millennial kingdom and the miraculous abundance of the earth to come. The Voice of the Elders Experience the early church's profound reverence for the spoken word and the living memories of those who walked with the original disciples, preferring the "living voice" over written books.A Window into Early Christian Theology Gain a deeper understanding of the eschatological beliefs, ancient controversies, and the spiritual landscape of Christianity in the generations immediately following the apostles.Whether you are exploring this work for its immense historical value, its theological insights, or its captivating glimpse into the oral traditions of antiquity, Expositions of the Sayings of the Lord offers wisdom and inspiration that remain crucial for understanding the roots of the faith.Step into a story of unparalleled historical discovery and uncover the timeless lessons of Papias.
