Five per cent of all births in Austria are premature, and the number of premature babies is rising steadily. The parent-child bond is a vital prerequisite for coping with a preterm birth. It forms the cornerstone of the grieving process, of crisis management, of developing a relationship with a preterm or disabled child, and of supporting a healthy preterm baby through life with love, joy and gratitude. Raising parents' awareness of the importance of bonding as a preventive measure is becoming increasingly important. By reflecting on the care methods used in two neonatal wards, this study examines whether the two non-standardised care methods applied result in differences in the process of establishing the parent-child bond, or in the level of involvement of nursing staff in this process. The aim of the book is to reflect on the situation faced by nursing staff and the challenges faced by parents, and to make these clear. It examines whether parents and children on the two compared neonatal wards encounter the same conditions and opportunities for establishing parent-child bonding.
