This paper examines sustainable food systems and the factors underlying successful cooperation. The globalisation of food markets and the negative consequences of industrial agriculture have given rise to new forms of food distribution. This has also led to the emergence of new forms of cooperation. This is because local food networks require cooperation at a wide variety of levels. These networks often view food production and consumption as a political, economic and ecological act. Food sovereignty and civic food networks support small-scale, local food networks, thereby making an important contribution to food democracy and climate protection. A shift in food production is of great importance for a transition towards sustainability.
