To perform well is to work on oneself; it is a matter of personal choice. Thus, human activity-whether that of a teacher or of any other individual-is always shaped by norms. This research dissertation examines the processes of renormalisation in the work of Catholic private teachers in Kaya, Burkina Faso. Teaching, far from being a mechanical application of pre-existing standards, requires renormalisation to make the work possible and bearable.
