Periodontal endoscopy (PE) is a minimally invasive technique that uses a fiber-optic endoscope to provide magnified and illuminated visualization of subgingival root surfaces. It enables real-time identification of calculus, root irregularities, and residual deposits, particularly in deep periodontal pockets, furcations, and complex root anatomy. By improving visualization, PE may enhance the precision of subgingival debridement. However, its use is limited by cost, increased chairside time, technique sensitivity, and the need for operator training. Although PE provides superior visualization, its additional clinical benefit over conventional periodontal instrumentation remains inconclusive.
