Due to its natural characteristics-developed relief, relatively abundant precipitation, and a well-developed hydrographic network-Republika Srpska is considered rich in hydropower potential. The total usable hydropower potential amounts to approximately 3,126 MW of installed capacity, corresponding to about 10,740 GWh/year of average annual electricity generation. At present, annual production is about 3,040.6 GWh, meaning that only around 28% of the available hydropower potential is being utilized. The exploitation of hydropower resources for electricity generation in Republika Srpska began more than 117 years ago. Currently, hydropower accounts for approximately 40-50% of the total electricity production in the entity.Compared with industrially developed European countries, Republika Srpska shows a relatively low level of hydropower utilization, particularly in the development of small hydropower plants. Although several small hydropower facilities have been constructed in recent years, their contribution remains minimal relative to the overall available hydropower potential.
