Play Well: the Ole Kirk Kristiansen Story: How a Danish Carpenter Built World's Favorite Toy Company

Long before the world knew the name LEGO, a boy in Denmark learned to watch a gate, finish a job, and never leave a mistake for someone else to find. That habit would carry Ole Kirk Kristiansen through a bankrupt economy, a factory fire that destroyed everything he'd built in a single night, and a risky bet on a strange new material called plastic that almost nobody in his industry trusted yet. This is the true story of how a small-town carpenter - armed with nothing more than patience, honesty, and a refusal to cut corners - built one of the most beloved toy companies in the world.Told as a true, chapter-by-chapter adventure and paired with real business lessons for young readers, Play Well follows Ole and his son Godtfred through twelve pivotal moments: the apprenticeship that taught him his craft, the Depression that nearly ended his business, the midnight mistake that taught quality control the hard way, and the tiny design flaw that had to be fixed before a simple plastic brick could change the world. Each chapter closes with a Founder's Lesson, a Business Word explained in plain language, discussion questions, and a hands-on activity - making this as at home in a classroom or homeschool unit as it is on a nightstand.Inside, young readers will discover: - How a farm boy's small chores became the foundation of a global company- What happened the night fire nearly ended everything Ole had built- Why "only the best is good enough" became a promise the whole company had to keep- The real story behind the brick that had to be redesigned before it could work- Twelve business concepts - from reputation to succession - explained through true events, not abstract definitionsA true story about patience, honesty, and building something that lasts - for every young reader who thinks their idea is too small to matter yet.
