Synthesizes the findings of a comparative analysis of 21 developing countries between 1950 and 1985, sponsored by the World Bank. Country studies themselves are being published as part of a series in 10 volumes, of which this is the last. In an attempt to identify conditions which explain different poverty alleviation outcomes, three different types of poverty are distinguished, and a framework is created for comparative analysis of growth outcomes. Evidence is used to argue for the continuing relevance of the classical liberal viewpoint on public policies for development. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
