What seems to be difficult when engaged in real time decision-making can gain clarity with the passage of time. The emotions of the moment tend to drive thoughtful analysis to an extent greater than perceived at the time. Events such as the Vietnam War, the Cold War, various peace efforts, to name a few, when evaluated retrospectively look different. This book examines the major issues of the post-WWII era using the rear-view mirror. Gone are the strong emotions of the day, the partisan bickering for political gain and the media positioning to gain ratings and attention. Those strong influences can drive contemporaneous evaluation but lose their impact with time, hence facilitating more sober analysis. Most importantly, one of the major theses of this book is that no one side, the political right nor the political left, the Democratic Party nor the Republican Party, the media nor the population as a whole, has a monopoly on truth. In examining historical issues, each has been more right than wrong and more wrong than right. The real world is a very messy place and there are few perfect answers to the issues of the day. Compromise, trade-offs and flexible adjustment to reality are more likely to end in a better place than confrontation and assertion of rightness.
