Prince Jan, St. Bernard

Prince Jan, St. Bernard by Forrestine C. Hooker is a mid¿twentieth¿century children's novel centred on a young St. Bernard puppy named Prince Jan, who aspires to live up to the heroic legacy of his ancestors' dogs famed for rescuing travellers from deadly snowstorms at the Hospice in the Alps. The story opens by introducing Jan and his brother, Rollo, as lively puppies raised by their mother and trained under the watchful guidance of the wise old dog Bruno, who teaches them the pride and duty of their breed. The monks of the Hospice examine Jan and express hope that he will grow into an exceptional rescue dog, like the legendary Barry, setting up a quiet expectation of courage and service. As the brothers begin their first lessons in the snowy wilderness, their playful antics and growing confidence reveal both their innocence and their eagerness to fulfil their role. The tone is warm and light-hearted, yet threaded through with a sense of responsibility, laying the groundwork for Jan's journey of self¿discovery, bravery, and the gradual realization of what it truly means to be a St. Bernard rescue dog.
