As the title suggests, Problems of Representation in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics, first published in 1987, presents more questions than answers. It was aimed at providing those concerned with basic research orientations, a fund of fundamental theoretical perspectives, research methodologies, analyses and research results. As the title suggests, Problems of Representation in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics, originally published in 1987, presents more questions than answers. This collection of articles, after two basic introductory chapters, can be divided into two sets. The first deals with a central issue, namely the notion of translation. Each chapter of the second set addresses differently the delicate question of internal representations. Today it can be read in its historical context.
