Progress Towards the Sustainable Development Goals in Arab Region 2026

A decade after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, the Arab region stands at a critical turning point in pursuing sustainable development, which is an ongoing process requiring innovation, adaptability, and commitment to human well-being. Persistent conflict and instability over the past two decades have significantly hindered effective planning and policy implementation. With only five years remaining to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the report assesses regional progress across all 17 goals and 169 targets, highlighting both achievements and pressing gaps. While progress has been made in areas such as poverty reduction, health, and water and sanitation, major challenges remain in economic growth, inequality, sustainable consumption, climate action, biodiversity, and global partnerships. These challenges are exacerbated by political instability, economic inequality, and limited resources. The report emphasizes urgent collective action, stronger policy alignment, and enhanced cross-sector collaboration to accelerate progress. It also underscores the importance of transformation in key areas, including food systems, energy, education, employment, and climate action. Strengthening institutional capacity, ensuring consistent financing, and improving data systems are essential. Reliable, accessible data and stronger national statistical systems are critical to informed decision-making, accountability, and effective monitoring of SDG progress across the region.
