If reading promotion in public libraries is to foster equality of opportunity and, by extension, gender equality, this requires that the picture books used for this purpose depict a diversity of gender roles and lifestyles. An analysis of four picture books frequently used for reading promotion highlights the gender stereotypes that children encounter in these books. The discussion examines the extent to which these picture books represent diverse gender identities and which role models are - or are not - presented to children as a result.
