The taboo surrounding sexuality is one of the main factors contributing to the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. It also leaves young adolescents vulnerable to teenage pregnancy and sexual assault. The aim of this study was to highlight the risks associated with the taboo surrounding sexuality and to propose a model for sex education for young adolescents in Rwanda. The main sources of information on sexuality for young adolescents in Rwanda, as in other societies where there is a strong taboo surrounding sexuality, are primarily peer groups and the media. Sex education encourages young adolescents to adopt safe sexual behaviours. The results are even better when young people receive such education before they have their first sexual encounter. This study sets out a model for sex education for young adolescents in Rwanda. To be effective, sex education must take into account and address the various dimensions of human sexuality.
