The Revised English Bible (REB) updates The New English Bible, preserving its elegant literary style, but replacing outdated language with clear, contemporary English. It employs a modest amount of inclusive language (e.g. 'brothers and sisters' for 'brothers') and is especially well suited to public reading. Like the NEB, the REB is a British translation, sponsored by the major Christian denominations of the UK. It uses British spelling and punctuation conventions. The Apocrypha, or Deuterocanonical Books, are writings from the inter-testamental period which were not included in the Hebrew canon but were incorporated into St Jerome's Latin Vulgate. Like the rest of the Revised English Bible, the REB Apocrypha aims to be both faithful to the original and idiomatic, using modern English words and phrases that convey the meaning of the original as closely as possible.
