Social withdrawal, reclusion at home, disconnection, and self-confinement are all forms of the phenomena called "Hikikomori" in Japan, where it appeared, that concerns a growing number of youths. How to understand these new hermits, their behavior, the causes and consequences of their withdrawal? How is this withdrawal experienced by them and their families? How to deal with the distress that manifests itself? All these questions, that make up the fabric of this work on the withdrawal of youth, are the result of the reflection of French and Japanese sociologists, anthropologists, psychiatrists, psychologists and psychoanalysts that have worked together to identify, describe, understand, and deal with this emerging phenomena in our contemporary societies.
