Replication in science

In response to the increasing number of cases of falsified scientific studies coming to light, there are calls within the scientific community and the media for study results to be reported conscientiously and replicated. Against the backdrop of increasing specialisation of knowledge in our society, laypeople are increasingly having to rely on the judgement of experts. But do replications influence the extent to which laypeople regard research findings as credible and experts as trustworthy? To answer this question, this book first provides a theoretical introduction to the topic. It then describes an experiment that examines the assessment of the credibility of a study's findings and the evaluation of the researcher's trustworthiness across the dimensions of expertise, integrity and benevolence, after participants had read articles from an online scientific journal about research findings with and without replications. Finally, the results are presented and discussed.
