Originally published in 1963, this book examines the tools and techniques of research to be applied in the field of international relations. The author takes the standpoint that at one extreme there is too strong a tendency to search speculatively for general principles by which to explain the nature of world politics. Originally published in 1965, the author makes a strong case for the study of international relations, arguing that given the rational approach he advocates, it is possible to avoid a major war since no government wants one. His theories reach some controversial conclusions. Throughout the book the author illustrates his arguments with examples taken from the last 100 years of European history. Material for more detailed study of these examples is included in the statistics and maps in the appendices.
