'Retarders'(vertragers) worden gebruikt om de sneldrogende eigenschappen van acrylverf tegen te gaan. Hierdoor is het mogelijk om nat-op-nat, of andere technieken toe te passen die anders alleen mogelijk zijn wanneer je olieverf gebruikt. Bij correct gebruik kan het medium de verf extra lang nat houden (van een half uur extra tot een volledige werkdag).
