There is a wealth of research into the mechanisms of French language acquisition and into teaching methods. In an era of globalisation and the predominance of the written word in our societies, mastery of this skill has become a necessity. It is therefore essential to prepare students for writing. The choice of this area of investigation is no accident. It stems from our experience as teachers who are required to assess our students' written work. How can we address the 'clumsiness' in their writing and help them improve their written expression? Our contribution therefore forms part of an analysis of the written work of first-year students on the DLLF course at Ibn Tofail University. This approach will enable us to identify the 'linguistic deficit' and the shortcomings of previous teaching methodologies regarding the teaching of French as a second language.
