Rig Mushkin and the Mighty Fort Adventure

Rig Mushkin and the Mighty Fort Adventure is a gentle, heart-warming children's story about recognising overwhelm, creating calm and learning what we need to feel safe and settled. In the story, Rig Mushkin is having a difficult day at the playground. The shouting, rushing, rumbling and roaring all become too much, leaving Rig feeling fuzzy and heavy inside. He searches for somewhere quiet to retreat, trying the book nook, the cubby and even behind the curtain but nowhere feels quite right. Then Rig has an idea, what if he creates his own peaceful space? Gathering blankets, cushions, fairy lights, a torch, books and a favourite soft toy, Rig builds a cosy fort where he can escape the noise and give himself the space he needs to feel calm again.Soon, Rig's friends begin to notice his cosy creation. Spirit joins him quietly, followed by a few more Mushkins who bring teddies and torches of their own. But when energetic Fizz bursts into the fort ready to play volcanoes, Rig realises that creating a calm space also means communicating what he needs. He gently explains that the fort is for quiet, soft play, helping Fizz understand how she can join while respecting the space.Together, the Mushkins transform the fort into a warm, peaceful retreat filled with comforting things. Rig discovers that when the world feels too loud or overwhelming, we can notice what our bodies are telling us, find or create spaces that help us feel calm, and let others know what we need.Perfect for young readers aged 3-7, Rig Mushkin and the Mighty Fort Adventure gently introduces children to sensory overwhelm, self-regulation and creating supportive environments. It reminds children that they don't have to simply push through when things feel too much, they can seek calm, communicate their needs and discover the people, places and things that help them feel safe and settled.
