Bol The concerns that led to this work are the result of activism in the Student Housing Movement in Pernambuco (MCE/PE). This experience provided an opportunity to learn more about the nuances of the implementation of student assistance policy by the Dean of Student Affairs (PROAES) at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). This sparked my desire to research the topic, as I understand that research is also a political act. Thus, I invite the reader to reflect on the process of democratisation of public universities, especially UFPE, and to seek to understand how this process takes place, given that it encourages the admission of socially vulnerable students without considering the bureaucratic hurdles that academic life presents, and without understanding the real needs for quality permanence in the academic locus. Taking these questions as a starting point, I focused my research on answering the following question: How has the Federal University of Pernambuco, through its Student Assistance Policy, responded to the needs of socially vulnerable students to remain in higher education?
