Road Trip Detour: Exploring Life's Journey by Chaplain Rich Miller-Murphy shares his early and mid-life struggles with mental health after losing his partner of 10 years to AIDS, his mother to pancreatic cancer, and his grandfather to heart surgery complications in 1990-91, and subsequently learning of his own illnesses. At the time, he led a double life afraid to share his own sexuality for fear of discrimination and what effect the truth might have on his career. Family support and love coming from friends, and work colleagues helped him through two inpatient psychiatric hospitalizations over forty years ago. Life changed immeasurably in his late forties and early fifties with his same sex marriage in 2004 and the birth of double miracle twins in 2007 using a gestational carrier.
