Rocks as big diamonds: Some things are forged before they shine: 1

What if the people who shape your life never realize they were your mentors? At seventeen, W.D. Smith had quit high school and had no clear direction. Then came the Marine Corps, combat, commercial roofing, difficult bosses, unexpected opportunities-and ordinary people who quietly taught him what leadership really means. From laborer to CEO, Smith discovered that leadership isn't built through titles. It's built through responsibility, discipline, failure, trust, and the people willing to see potential in us before we see it ourselves. At the center of his journey is one unforgettable promise from a demanding roofing mentor: "Stick with me, kid, and you'll be wearing rocks as big as diamonds." He thought it meant success. Years later, he understood the truth: the rocks were responsibility. Rocks as Big as Diamonds is a candid, story-driven exploration of mentorship, personal growth, resilience, and real-world leadership-and a reminder that sometimes an ordinary person can leave an extraordinary mark on your life.
