Russian Narval Class Submarine

The Narval class were a group of submarines built for the Imperial Russian Navy. They were designed by the Holland company and ordered in the 1911 programme. They had advanced features including watertight bulkheads, a crash diving tank and gravitationally filled ballast tanks which did not feature in contemporary Russian-designed boats. The boats were well regarded by the Russian Navy and served in the Black Sea Fleet during World War I, when they sank 8 merchant ships and 74 coastal vessels. In 1918 submarines included the Ukrainian State Navy. The Imperial Russian Navy refers to the Tsarist fleets prior to the Bolshevik Revolution. Under Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich construction of the first three-masted ship, actually built within Russia, was completed in 1636. It was built in Balakhna by Danish shipbuilders from Holstein according to European design and was christened the Frederick. During its maiden voyage on the Caspian Sea the Frederick unfortunately sailed into a heavy storm and was lost at sea.
