Salmonellosis and Fungal Diseases in Wild Animals

Wild animals are known to be reservoirs of bacterial and fungal agents of zoonotic importance that cause illness in immunosuppressed animals. The microbiota of reptiles is composed of unusual Salmonella serovars that can be transmitted to humans and other animals through direct and indirect contact. Cases of human salmonellosis are serious and can lead to death, which affects public health in several countries. Wild birds stand out for the presence of fungi in their gastrointestinal tract and skin, which are associated with high morbidity and mortality in these animals and can also be transmitted to humans. Candidiasis, aspergillosis and megabacteriosis are increasingly present in the clinical routine of birds. Therefore, it is important to know about them in order to avoid possible diagnostic errors and to establish treatment protocols. The aim of this study was to carry out a bibliographic survey on the presence of Salmonella in reptiles and to describe the main fungal diseases in birds. In this way, we hope to gather information and elucidate the role of these diseases in the health of wild animals and humans.
