Opus non solum de morte imperatoris tractat, sed etiam de necessitudine inter Ecclesiam et Imperium Romanum, fundamenta iaciens doctrinae politicae christianae.Ambrosius, verbis piis et eloquentia plenis, Theodosium ut exemplum principis christiani depingit, qui paenitentiam agere non timuit et fidem catholicam contra haereses defendit.
