He thought back to his time at school where he knew he was being groomed to be a citizen. Not any citizen, but one that had influence. One that ran things or made things or led things. A simple wagon driver didn't need to know the words of the poets and the thoughts of the great thinkers. The few things they needed to know could be learnt on the job.Commerce was the path most of his classmates followed. Look at Alexis. Look at that pig Aurelius, a senator now. Even Marcellus had a slave business. And him? A nothing until now, and it showed. Well it showed to him anyway. Maybe it was time to put all his learning to the test. Why not? It seems the Gods were steering his life to increasing prosperity, so why not seize it and run full speed toward success. Surely it was time for him to create an empire of his own. A business better than merely being an agent like Alexis. Bigger than Aurelius's land holdings, and certainly more honourable than selling slaves. Why not dream even bigger.
