Scriptural Allusions and Exegetical Techniques in the Book of Revelation

The present book investigates the book of Revelation's unique approach to referencing Old Testament scriptures, emphasizing its reliance on allusions and utilization of exegetical techniques that were used in Antiquity. The contributors discuss the challenges and possibilities of identifying scriptural references in Revelation. Revelation is deeply influenced by the Old Testament, both linguistically and thematically, and often uses established traditions and targum-like interpretations. The ten contributions include studies on the education of the author of Revelation; reception of specific Old Testament books such as the Minor Prophets, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel; and the influence of early Jewish writings like First Enoch on the book of Revelation. Comparative aspects-for example, the reception of Isaiah in Revelation and in the Ascension of Isaiah-are also highlighted, showing shared theological themes and hermeneutic approaches. Additionally, the book explores the interpretation of the "seven spirits of God" in Revelation and the possible use of Revelation in Cyril of Jerusalem's fourth-century catechesis.
