Nobody expects school to be fun, not even mermaids. Celena and her friends only begin to enjoy (though they would hate to admit it) when a field trip leads them to the deepest part of the ocean, the Mariana Trench. When setting up camp on the shore, they realize how polluted the beaches are, how unkind humans are to the Ocean and all her creatures. They realize that the essence of being a true mermaid lies in conserving the Ocean. They talk of the fables of mermaids who live on land, much like our dear reader, who help protect the ocean, and leave the trip with the understanding that being a mermaid is not about your origin or your stories, but about your actions, your kindness, and your willingness to be one of Earth's helpers
